Elsa Aims for the academic year 2013/14

As a society we aspire to become bigger and better. So as the Committee of 2013/14, here are our aims for the year:

– Provide members with a foundation for learning about the legal profession and laws in different countries through trips and visits.
– To provide affordable activities to members and remain active as a society throughout the year.
– To represent Newcastle Law School positively, as a prestigious institution for learning with a high calibre of students
– To allow Members of Elsa Newcastle to meet other Elsa members in the community
– The Committee aims to work effectively as a team to provide a better society for our members, to continue to grow as a society and gain more presence in Newcastle Law School and beyond.

ELSA Newcastle Human Rights Debate

On the 6th of March 2013, ELSA Newcastle are hosting a student debate on the topic of Human Rights here at Newcastle University Law School.

The debate will be in British parliamentary style, between teams comprised of 2 members each.

The motions are:

  • (i) This House proposes that in a society without formal laws it is impossible to have sufficient protection for a person’s Human Rights.
  • (ii) This House believes that for all its rhetoric, the UN is not a humanitarian organisation but primarily a political one.

We have secured fantastic prizes: a £50 Eldon Square voucher for EACH member of the winning team as well as a prize for the runners up, which will be presented at a prize giving ceremony after the debate with free drinks and canapés.

The debate is open to everyone, including those who don’t attend Newcastle University, or even do law!

The debate offers a great opportunity to have fun, socialise and improve your knowledge on Human Rights; and it will look great on your CV! Debating enhances and develops skills which are reputable with all employers, whether you enter the legal profession or not.

If you want to take part, or would like further info, email Mustapha at m.a.adam@ncl.ac.uk
